With the recent repeal of the “lockout” laws, Sydney is taking a further step towards growing a vibrant, safe and strong 24 hour economy for all residents and visitors with the establishment of an Industry Advisory Group scheduled to meet for the first time on 3 February.
The next step towards a 24 hour economy will be the development of a 24 Hour Economy Strategy and the release of a draft Exposure Bill seeking stakeholder feedback and public consultation to ensure the state’s liquor laws are risk based with a more customer centric approach for businesses.
Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said the Strategy will aim to build a vibrant 24 hour economy and enhance Sydney’s reputation as a truly global city.
“There’s been a cultural shift in the city’s night life since 2014 and it’s time to look towards a bright, safe and diverse Sydney throughout the day and night. We can achieve this not only by improving our liquor laws but by enhancing access to arts, entertainment, shopping and sporting activities that are inclusive and family friendly,” Mr Ayres said.
“The 24 hour Economy Strategy will establish a pathway to make Sydney the best it’s ever been.”
The Exposure Bill will seek to merge existing sanctions schemes (Violent Venues, Three Strikes and Minor Sanctions) into a consolidated system. This will focus on incentivising good behaviour, minimising violence in venues and reducing significant breaches of liquor laws. The Bill will also address a closer alignment between licensing and planning, geospatial risk assessment and changes to music restrictions.
Minister for Customer Service Victor Dominello said a single scheme will make it easier for venues to understand and comply with their obligations, and support the Independent Liquor & Gaming Authority to more easily identify and manage alcohol-related harm.
“We’ll be building on the good work done by others, such as the City of Sydney Council and the Committee for Sydney, and working with NSW Government agencies, councils, businesses and the community to get this right.
“The NSW Government welcomes input into how we can reinvigorate Sydney and commits to creating a bold vision for a revitalised, safe, inclusive and vibrant Sydney throughout the day and night.”
