Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith together with the Penrith RSL Club hosted a breakfast to recognise and celebrate International Women’s Day which is held each year on March 8.
International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
The event was supported by the Penrith CBD Corporation, with the theme for the 2017 International Women’s Day being #BeBoldForChange and called upon the community to join together to create a more gender inclusive world.
Guests at the breakfast listened intently as a panel of speakers, Wing Commander Fleur James – Air Force, Sergeant Julie Mayor – Army and Squadron Leader Amanda Gosling – Air Force, shared their experiences, both the highs and lows, of being women in the armed forces.
“Listening to the speakers share their honest and heartfelt experience of the challenges they faced as Australian service women deployed overseas, was truly inspirational. I commend them for the dedication and commitment they have shown to serving their country as part of the Australian Defence Force” said Stuart Ayres.
“IWD is an opportunity to recognise and thank these and all women in our community; to encourage and celebrate their contribution to making Penrith and the wider community a great place to live and work”.
Proceeds raised from today’s event went to the Women’s Veterans Network Australia, which helps female veterans connect and share experiences and information. Further details on the WVNA can be found at https://www.wvna.org/
