Qantas Investment Cements Sydney As Global Travel Hub

The NSW Government has welcomed today’s announcement from Qantas regarding its significant order of new aircraft that will revolutionise international and domestic travel, and put Sydney at the heart of its major new non-stop global services as the launch-city for the new offering.

Premier Dominic Perrottet reiterated support for the company and said the move emphasises Sydney as Australia’s only truly global city.

“The decision by Qantas to invest in the world-class aircraft to connect Australia to major global cities such as New York and London, is a huge win for the state,” Mr Perrottet said.

“This announcement, combined with the recent decision to keep its global headquarters here in NSW, will help create 2,500 jobs and generate more than $300 million in local economic benefits.”

The airline will order 12 new Airbus A350-1000s to commence non-stop long-haul services to a number of global cities from 2025. Further next generation aircraft have been ordered for domestic routes from 2023.

Minister for Enterprise, Investment and Trade Stuart Ayres said the new aircraft and services will have a significant impact in expanding the NSW visitor economy.

“Qantas is reshaping its international routes and networks, and we are proud to have Sydney at the forefront of this major development as the exclusive launch city,” Mr Ayres said.

“As well as connecting Australia with the world like never before, those flying into and around NSW from 2025 will do so in greater comfort, with more choice and through more environmentally-friendly craft.

“As we recover from the pandemic, it’s exciting to think about the hugely positive impact this investment will have on our economy, the jobs it will bring and the boost it will deliver across our communities.”
