Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith joined Councillor Brian Cartwright to  announce that Penrith City Council (PCC) has received a $10,000 grant to bring Grandparents Day to life in the local community for 2018.

Generations of families and friends will come together to celebrate seniors in Penrith  thanks to this NSW Government grant towards PCC’s Parker St Reserve Grandparents day event.

“Grandparents Day is a wonderful opportunity to say thank you to the seniors in our community, and PCC is offering a great way to give back with a fun filled day,” Stuart Ayres said.

“I hope to see Penrith residents young and old enjoying Grandparents Day and I encourage everyone to bring their grandparents or the older people in their lives along to Parker St Reserve on 28 October.”

Clr Cartwright said with this support from the NSW Government, PCC’s Grandparents day event will celebrate older people and grandparents by offering games, story-telling, lunch and the ever popular billycart races.

NSW Grandparents Day celebrates the role grandparents and older people play in communities across NSW, and is held annually on the last Sunday in October. The day was launched by the NSW Government in 2011.

Minister for Ageing Tanya Davies said that more than $200,000 has been delivered to councils, schools and community organisations to hold Grandparents Day celebrations this October.

“Grandparents Day gives us a chance to recognise the older people in our lives for the invaluable contributions they make to their families and communities,” Mrs Davies said.

Last year, the NSW Government doubled the amount of funding available to organisations so they could deliver a diverse range of events that reach more people. In 2018, NSW Grandparents Day will be celebrated on Sunday 28 October, while the NSW Grandparent of the Year Awards will be presented at a ceremony on 24 October.

Local events will be published on the Grandparents Day website in coming weeks. For more information and to submit an Award nomination or photography competition entry, please visit: www.grandparentsday.nsw.gov.au.
