NSW Government provides $50,000 to support future Olympians

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Graham Annesley, has announced NSW Government funding of $50,000 in support of the 2013 Australian Youth Olympic Festival which will be staged a various locations throughout Sydney.

“The 2013 Australian Youth Olympic Festival is an initiative of the Australian Olympic Committee and will take place from 16 – 20 January 2013 and provides a great opportunity for future Olympians to test themselves at the highest level of competition during a multisport event,” Mr Annesley said.

“International athletes from thirty nations will get to use world class competition venues built for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, which include the Penrith Whitewater, Dunc Gray Velodrome, and the Sydney International Regatta Centre

“They will experience a memorable Opening Ceremony, live in a village environment, and even receive medals in the tradition of the Olympic Games.

“This event will also be an important step for many athletes in their quest for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio,” Mr Annesley added.

Stuart Ayres, Member for Penrith, welcomed the funding, reiterating his passion to boost the visitor economy in Penrith.

\”I am passionate about expanding the visitor economy in Penrith,\” Mr Ayres said.

\”Whether it’s the natural beauty of the Nepean River, the Penrith Lakes precinct or our multitude of sporting facilities, our region has a lot to offer people.

“It will also be a welcome boost for local businesses and help to promote the Penrith venue as a world class location for elite water sport competitions.

“I look forward to the event and the continued promotion of Penrith as a sporting and visitor destination into the future,\” Mr Ayres added.

Mr Annesley added, “The Australian Youth Olympic Festival is expected to attract thousands of athletes, officials, support workers and spectators to NSW.

“I wish organisers all the best for what I’m sure will be a fantastic event for everyone involved and a great way to start the 2013 sporting calendar,” Mr Annesley concluded.
