Rowing

Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres MP today congratulated Sydney International Rowing Regatta (SIRR) for winning the Premier’s Partnership Award at the 2013 Public Service Awards. The awards which were held at Sydney Town Hall recognise the most outstanding achievements across the NSW Public Service.

“It is wonderful that SIRR have been recognised for the excellent local contributions and achievements they make.” Said Mr Ayres

This prestigious accolade recognises outstanding partnerships between public sector teams and business, non-government and/or academic/training organisations delivering results against at least one goal in NSW 2021 plan.

In March 2013 the Sydney International Regatta Centre hosted the Sydney International Rowing Regatta. It was the first time the World Rowing Cup opening round has ever been held in the southern hemisphere and only the second time outside Europe. The international event, staged 18-24 March 2013, also included the King’s and Queen’s Cup Regattas, Australian Open Rowing Championships and Australian Schools Rowing Championships.

“This event provided an outstanding showcase for rowing and delivered substantial social and economic benefits for the Penrith community.” said Mr Ayres.

The event generated up to $7 million for the local economy and provided a fantastic opportunity for thousands of visitors to see world class rowers in action, including recent medal winners from the London 2012 Olympic Games.

“Sydney International Rowing Regatta demonstrates clearly that when given the opportunity to conduct world class events in Penrith our community can deliver amazing results.” Mr Ayres said.

The 2014 Sydney International Rowing Regatta will again be held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre in March.
