Sydney lights up from Friday and visitors are reminded to plan their visit to enjoy the largest festival of light, music and ideas in the Southern Hemisphere.
Minister for Enterprise, Investment and Trade, Tourism and Sport and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said it was full steam ahead with preparations, with less than a week to go before Vivid Sydney 2022 Lights On.
“With more than 200 events scheduled, there is something for everyone,” Mr Ayres said.
“The Vivid Sydney 2022 program bursts with exciting events, incredible music performances and fantastic light installations and 3D projections. Vivid Sydney draws millions of people into the Harbour City’s CBD, which will provide a shot in the arm for businesses and a smile on the faces of festival-goers.
“Visitors should be mindful of the festival’s popularity on weekends, with Monday to Wednesday nights the best choice for a more relaxed atmosphere.
“This is a time to come together, to shake off the last couple of years and to get reacquainted with the beauty of Sydney and be inspired and amazed by Vivid Sydney 2022.”
Minister for Transport and Veterans David Elliott said public transport was not only the best way to travel to and from this spectacular event, it would also be part of the action this year.
“For the first time ever, Central Station and the Goods Line Tunnel, a forgotten historical landmark, will be part of Vivid 2022, offering an illuminating glimpse into Sydney’s rich transport history,” Mr Elliott said.
“The Goods Line Tunnel beneath Central Station, which first opened in 1855, will be transformed into a modern convergence of lights, lasers and smoke effects with more than 100 laser lights – the largest laser installation in Vivid Sydney history.
“Central Station’s iconic ceiling and clock tower will also be lit up while the Grand Concourse will be the stage for a series of free live music performances each Saturday night during the festival.
“Extra public transport services will operate during the festival as large numbers of visitors are expected to travel to the CBD to enjoy Australia’s largest light show spectacular,” Mr Elliott said.
Mr Elliott said there would be some changes to public transport services during the festival as a safety precaution to manage the crowds expected around the harbour foreshore.
Buses that usually run to and from Circular Quay will be relocated to stops at Martin Place on Fridays from 6 pm and weekends from 5 pm.
Light rail services will run until late each night of the festival, but will not run between Town Hall and Circular Quay from 6 pm on Fridays and 5 pm on weekends.
On Saturday nights and Sunday 12 June during the long weekend, train passengers will not be able to alight at Circular Quay Station between 6 pm and 11 pm, festival attendees should alight at Wynyard, St James or Martin Place stations instead and walk to the harbour.
