Baird Government Commits $12 Million for Western Sydney Community and Sports Centre

A re-elected Baird Government will commit $12 million towards the construction of a state-of-the-art Western Sydney Community and Sports Centre in Penrith – creating up to 300 new jobs and attracting new investment to the area.

NSW Premier Mike Baird was joined for the announcement by Minister for Sport and Recreation and Penrith MP Stuart Ayres, Penrith Panthers CEO Warren Wilson, Executive General Manager Phil Gould and a number of Panthers’ NRL players.

“We’re proud to support grassroots sport which boosts participation across the community and gets people of all ages into the habits of a healthy lifestyle,” Mr Baird said.

“Today’s announcement is another example of the Baird Government working with groups like the Panthers to build vital community infrastructure.

“I applaud the work the Panthers have done, and I’m proud to join with them today in making this dream a reality for Western Sydney and the Penrith community.”

The $60 million project will provide space for netball, futsal, wheelchair rugby and other indoor sports, a large gymnasium and exhibition and event halls.

Mr Ayres said the announcement again shows the Baird Government’s commitment to grassroots sport across the State.

“This is the type of facility Penrith as a regional city deserves – servicing a population catchment well over 500,000, this facility will host sporting events, trade shows, exhibitions and will be used regularly by the local community,” Mr Ayres said.

“The Western Sydney Sport and Community Centre is exactly the type of multi-use facility our community needs to grow our local economy, create jobs and stay healthy and active.”

Panthers Group CEO Warren Wilson said today’s announcement is terrific news for the people of Western Sydney.

“This facility will be a wonderful addition to the community and on behalf of Panthers, I thank Premier Baird and our local member Stuart Ayres,” Mr Wilson said.

“With the Commonwealth matching today’s contribution from the Baird Government, Panthers will inject the final $36 million to complete this outstanding new facility.”
